Just When You Thought Things Couldn’t Get Worse
Newham Housing comes under more criticism.
The Standard reported the news that “serious fraud” had been uncovered in Newham’s housing allocations.
It seems that 35 homes were allocated to people who did not qualify for them.
This is a trifle embarrassing when Newham has one of the largest waiting lists in the country.
Very little detail is given about who was given housing, nor whether this was done for money or because of community/friendship links.
It seems that it was not the unremitting diligence of our leaders that uncovered the fraud, rather, a member of staff blew the whistle on a colleague who was “manipulating the system”.
The unnamed staff member resigned immediately upon being confronted. Newham says that they are co-operating with the police; the police say there is no current investigation being conducted. Make of that what you will.
It is anticipated that the 35 homes will be recovered. Eventually.
