This is Interesting. How will Mayor Fiaz deal with this?
We note that Newham did eventually fly the Ukrainian flag, but chose not to fly the Israeli flag after October 7th. If memory serves us well, Cllr Mirza was one of those who objected to the very idea of commemorating the massacre that started the recent conflict.
Acceding to Cllr Mirza’s request might not go down too well with what’s left of Labour’s voters, 89% of whom are opposed to recognizing a Palestine state without conditions.
Starmer’s lame attempt to curry favour with Muslim voters is unlikely to do either him or the party much good. But how will Newham Council respond?
Here’s a suggestion, fly the Palestinian flag and the Israeli flag alongside one another. Let’s see how keen people are on peace and how much support there is out there for a Jewish and Arab state living alongside one another.
