In an interesting diversion from the norm, the February meeting of Newham Council saw a voice of dissent.

We have learned that former Mayor of Newham, one Robin Wales (and the picture is a Welsh dragon, not a devil; subtle, eh?), anyway, the former mayor has taken metaphorical pen to paper and is nearing completion of a tome that looks at his time in office in Newham.

We are getting interesting, and disturbing reports from Labour councillors who have recently been interviewed to determine if they are suitable candidates to stand for election in 2022.

Would you believe it? Two hundred and thirty applicants to become councillors and Newham Labour seem to have run out of women.

The publication of Roxi and the Tablighis has raised some interesting additional material.

The individual, ‘Mufti’ Umair Zulfiqar was identified as one of the principal activists within one faction of Tablighi Jamaat and within Newham People’s Alliance.

Labour has been distributing leaflets. Good for them. It’s what political parties do.

Prominent amongst the claims made by Mayor Fiaz are that Newham has the lowest council tax in East London. Just how did she manage that after raising council tax by the maximum every year that she has been in office?

We know that Newham is effectively a one-party state, but surely this missive from the London Labour Party to its members must be a little presumptuous.

Veteran councillor from Royal Docks, Patrick Murphy has resigned the whip in protest at the decision of the Labour Party to reimpose Rokhsana Fiaz as Labour’s candidate for mayor in the May 2022 local elections.

The NEC has spoken. Rokhsana Fiaz was re-selected as the candidate who will contest the mayoralty in the local elections in May.

We reported a little while ago about the cost of the astonishing number of staff who have left Newham Council having had to sign non-disclosure orders, some 63 over the course of three years.

It seems that the interviews for the Labour Candidate for Mayor were held on Tuesday 1st February. As we predicted, the only candidates were Rokhsana Fiaz and Unmesh Desai. No results have yet been announced.

It seems that Ms Fiaz needed to be called back for a second interview on Thursday 3rd February. The procedure has been somewhat opaque so we don’t know the reason that the panel needed to see her again.

In what appears to be a co-ordinated event, the Chair of East Ham CLP, Tahir Mirza and the Chair of West Ham CLP, Carel Buxton have both resigned the membership of the Labour Party.

From a panel of about eight candidates who submitted their names with regard to an interest in the Labour candidacy for mayor, the NEC have decided to interview two.
