Labour’s Internal War Stirred by Former Member

We understood that the formerly Labour, and litigiously inclined councillor for Green St West, one Lewis Godfrey was intending to leave politics for a quiet life. We were content to say, “goodbye and good riddance”.

Godfrey was suspended from the party and subsequently was ineligible for re-selection. We are yet to hear who Labour will stand in his place, albeit for a ward where Newham Independents are very confident of a clean sweep.

But back to Mr Godfrey. It seemed that he was becoming increasingly distressed at seeing his name in print. Not least for his interminable posts on social media.

It therefore came as something of a surprise to discover that he is still active on social media. And engaging on political issues. Apparently, he is now seeking to undermine Labour’s new mayoral candidate.

He is still listed on the Newham website as an Independent councillor, but we wonder if we can discern a drift towards the Greens. We suspect that there are many who would happily see him go. Who knows, maybe he is planning on running for the Greens next time round.

Not content to throw in his weight with the chattering classes Godfrey implies “misogyny and sectarianism” on the part of the Labour candidate for mayor. Strong stuff that may be interpreted as libelous.

But could this be a not too subtle dig at Hussain’s religion? Which groups can you think of that are repeatedly accused of misogyny and sectarianism?

We note that the Labour government, who are intent on introducing Islamophobia laws, even if it has to be by the back door has reframed Islamophobia as ‘anti-Muslim hostility’. This is a quote from an early draft of the definition. "The prejudicial stereotyping and racialisation of Muslims, as part of a collective group with set characteristics, to stir up hatred against them, irrespective of their actual opinions, beliefs or actions as individuals."

Let us hope, for his sake, that either he has good evidence or a good lawyer.
