Smoke, Mirrors and Mayoral Races: The Curious Case of the Allegations Against Forhad Hussain

Newham Labour Mayoral Candidate - Forhad Hussain

In the final weeks before a hotly contested Mayoral election, it was perhaps inevitable that something would emerge to try and knock one of the frontrunners off course.

What we didn’t expect, however, was just how quickly allegation would be presented as fact and how readily parts of the political ecosystem would run with it.

At the centre of the storm is Forhad Hussain, Newham Labour’s Mayoral candidate.

And at the centre of the accusation? A claim that he purchased a shared ownership property whilst already owning another home.

A serious allegation, If true.

The Source of the Storm

Novara Media Article - Which has now been taken down

The claims originate from an article published on Novara Media, authored by self-styled journalist Rivkah Brown.

The headline pulls no punches:

“Labour Mayoral candidate bought council house while already a homeowner.”

No “allegedly.” No caveats, No ambiguity. Just assertion.

At OpenNewham, we take a slightly different approach, we prefer evidence over noise. So we went looking.

Allegation 1: The “Second Property”

The core of the claim rests on a 2011 Register of Interests entry, which shows Hussain declaring an interest in a property on Stopford Road, Plaistow.

On the surface, that sounds incriminating until you actually understand what the register is.

At the time, councillors were required to declare the address in which they resided.

Not investment properties.

Not hidden assets.

Not secret portfolios.

Just where they lived!

That is exactly what Hussain did. He followed the rules, transparently.

And here’s the uncomfortable truth for his accusers:

What is now being presented as evidence of wrongdoing is, in reality, evidence of compliance.

A decade-old administrative disclosure has been dragged into 2026 and reframed as something sinister.

That’s not investigative journalism. That’s reinterpretation at best and misrepresentation at worst.

A Different Era

It’s also worth noting something that feels almost quaint today back then politicians routinely published their home addresses. Openly, Without fear, Those days are gone. And not by accident.

The increasingly toxic nature of political discourse fuelled from both extremes has made that level of transparency a personal risk.

So what we’re seeing here is something more troubling:

A system designed for openness being retrospectively weaponised.

Allegation 2: The “Right to Buy Discount”

The second pillar of the accusation is that Hussain benefited from a Right to Buy discount when acquiring the shared ownership property.

Again — a serious claim.

Again — one we examined.

And again — no evidence.

Hussain’s position is clear:

• He was not a council tenant at the time

• He therefore did not qualify for, nor receive, any Right to Buy discount

Without tenancy, there is no discount.

Without discount, there is no scandal.

Yet this claim has been circulated with the same confidence as the first.

The Problem With Certainty

This brings us back to that headline. The issue here is not just what was said, it’s how it was said.

When you present an allegation as fact, you cross a line. Additionally when that allegation cannot withstand even basic scrutiny, the questions start to shift:

• Not “what did Hussain do?”

• But “why was this written this way?”

Follow the Network

In politics, context matters.

So we looked at the digital footprint of the journalist at the centre of this story.

A cursory glance at social media connections reveals a notable pattern:

A significant number of Newham Green Party figures appear within that network.

Now, that in itself proves nothing. But when combined with the tone and direction of the reporting, it raises a fair question: Is this journalism or is this politics by other means?

The Reaction: Speed Over Scrutiny

If the article lit the match, others wasted no time pouring petrol on it.

Prominent Green figures moved swiftly to amplify the claims:

• Public statements

• Social media posts

• Immediate condemnation

No pause.

No investigation.

No due process.

Just conclusion. The Green mayoral candidate weighed in. (see below)

Mr Choudhary’s post on X

Mr Choudhary’s post linked to the now deleted post of Rivkah Brown of Novara Media.

Cllr Nate Higgins followed suit — seemingly comfortable stepping into the roles of judge, jury, and executioner.

Green Party Councillor - Nate Higgins delivers his verdict.

In an election cycle where credibility matters, this kind of rush to judgement is revealing.

Labour’s Response

London Labour statement

Labour, for their part, have pushed back against the allegations and maintained that there has been no wrongdoing.

But in modern politics, rebuttal often travels slower than accusation and by the time the facts catch up, the narrative has already taken root.

At OpenNewham, we don’t deal in hysteria. We deal in facts, context, and accountability.

And on the basis of what we have seen, we are comfortable saying this:

This story does not stack up.

What we appear to be witnessing is a deeply cynical political attack, built on:

• Misunderstood documentation

• Unsupported claims

• And a headline that overreaches the available evidence

That’s not holding power to account. That’s attempting to manufacture a scandal.

The Risk of Overreach

There is also a real-world consequence to this kind of reporting.

When allegations are presented as facts without sufficient grounding, those involved open themselves up to serious legal risk.

Libel.

Defamation.

Reputational damage.

These are not abstract concepts they are very real, very actionable outcomes.

It would be naïve to assume this ends here.

A Political War Begins

One thing is now beyond doubt. Lines have been drawn.

What may have started as an article has escalated into something far larger: A political confrontation that will not end on May 7th.

Because if there is one certainty in Newham politics right now, it is this:

Those who believe they have been falsely accused do not tend to walk away quietly and those who launched the attack may soon discover that actions have real world legal consequences.

As ever, we will continue to follow the facts wherever they lead.
